In horse therapy relapse is something often visited by patients, unless they are in a treatment center under the strict supervision of equine courses. I took a small poll recently about whether or not relapse is a part of recover and heres the answer I got the most...
"I think its not something needed, but if it does happen it can prove to be a powerful experience towards recovery"
It's a very sain answer and makes sense. In horse therapy its never about being perfect! Relapse happens sometimes!
"Detox is never fun for anyone. Parents, loved ones, case managers, and of course the clients involved all dislike a trip to detox. Relapse is not mandatory for recovery, though the good news is that there is such a thing as a therapeutic relapse...
"It is very common for addicts and alcoholics to come into treatment and have certain reservations.
Alcoholism and addiction to drugs were not developed overnight and a person's will and self delusion to protect their right to use is often complex and it requires time and sometimes discomfort the reality to become clear to them.
Sober Living By The Sea's extended care clients often come from primary treatment (at isolated facilities) and we help them integrate back into the mainstream of life. This can be double edge sword. Most will be attracted to the beautiful surroundings, the clinical staff, and the progressive 12 step community. For some clients, having access to money and phones can be too much temptation during a low moment in the recovery process. Relapse does happen, and detox is required to start the sobriety cycle over.
It is not desired by our treatment center to take this action and it costs $200 and up per day for a client to be in a detox facility.
Relapse Lessons
A relapse doesn't necessarily indicate that a man or woman does not desire to get and stay sober. A relapse doesn't indicate that the individual will not "bounce back" and "get it." But if the client still has reservations about their chemical dependency or the need for recovery, sometimes really good things can come out of a relapse.
First and foremost is that he or she is safe. Better for the relapse to happen here in a somewhat controlled environment with professional support early in sobriety.
By the time the client leaves us, they need to have new routine and foundation for a much healthier lifestyle. This can be a painful process. So, if there is a relapse, we have to learn as much as we can from it so that it does not have to happen again.
In Case of Relapse
Keeping addicts and alcoholics accountable is not always pleasant and sending them to detoxis never fun. Though by now, we all understand that accountability is a requirement for recovery. People relapse because that is what addicts and alcoholics do with untreated addiction. The first 2 questions and last you might ask after you or loved one has relapsed.
1) Well did you learn anything? Most always the answer is "Yes!"
2) Are you going to do something different if put in that position again? Hopefully another "Yes" (with details to follow)...
